Why Fast Fashion Matters (to Me & the Planet)
The fast fashion industry isn’t just about cheap clothes, it comes with a serious environmental price. Here’s what’s really going on, and why upcycling matters so much.
1. Massive Carbon Emissions
- The fashion industry contributes 10% of global carbon emissions, making it one of the planet’s biggest polluters. Gitnux+2Rawshot.ai+2
- According to a systematic review, the fashion industry is responsible for 8% of all global greenhouse gas emissions.
2. Insane Water Use & Pollution
- It takes about 2,700 liters of water to produce just one cotton t-shirt. European Parliament+1
- Textile dyeing and finishing processes (very common in fast fashion) cause around 20% of global clean water pollution. European Parliament+1
- The industry uses roughly 93 billion cubic meters of water every year, according to research. MDPI+1
3. Toxic Chemicals & Microplastics
- Fast fashion relies heavily on synthetic fibers (like polyester), which shed microplastics: washing synthetic clothes can release hundreds of thousands of microfibers into waterways. European Parliament
- These dyes and chemical treatments often contain heavy metals and toxic substances that pollute water and damage ecosystems. Scientific American
4. Waste Overload
- Every year, the world produces about 92 million tonnes of textile waste, much of it coming from fast fashion. ZipDo+2Gitnux+2
- Less than 1% of used clothes are actually recycled into new garments — most end up in landfills because recycling infrastructure is still very limited. European Parliament+1
- According to the European Parliament, textile production is a major source of land use and water degradation. European Parliament
5. Fast Fashion Encourages Disposable Mindsets
- With super-fast production cycles, trends change quickly, and people wear cheap clothes just a few times before discarding them. Earth.Org
- This throwaway mentality fuels overconsumption, environmental degradation, and unsustainable production.
Why I Choose to Do Things Differently
Sustainability is core to MillieGoat. I believe in creating thoughtfully, not just making things fast or cheap.
Upcycling isn’t just a method; it’s a statement. By using thrifted and secondhand materials, I reduce demand for new fabric and help cut down on resource extraction and pollution.
Every piece has a story. I love that the fabrics I use already lived a life, and turning them into new bags means that life doesn’t just end, it keeps going in a way that’s more conscious and creative.
You can be part of the change. Choosing upcycled pieces or exploring tutorials isn’t just making a better bag, it’s making a better future.
